His work calls into question the role of both ideology and art in the creation of a new social order, and in such works as Intervista (1998), Dammi i Colori (2003)…, the Albanian communist regime of his childhood is present. Sounds and images have also always nurtured his work. “Because music always suggests images, I like the duality of the images enkindled by the music, and the images actually composing the film” explains the artist.
Internationally-recognized for the quality and originality of his work, Sala exhibited in the most prestigious international venues: at the Kunsthalle in Vienna, the Serpentine Gallery in London, the NMAO of Osaka and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
Anri Sala has been selected to represent France at the 2013 Venice Biennale by French Ministry of Culture and by Institut Francais with the help of contemporary art experts. In an unusual twist, Sala's work will be exhibited in the German pavilion while the German artist will be exhibiting in the French pavilion.
